Our first full day in Reykjavik, Iceland and we took a 9-hour tour by bus around the countryside.  We saw some fantastic sites, soaked up some Icelandic history, learned a few more lessons as world travelers (😃😃), met a friendly "rival," and finished the day with a delightful Scandinavian meal of roast beef and salmon for me and smoke salmon and smoked eel for John (with wine and beer, of course).

We started our tour today at the Froheimor greenhouses were they grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and grapes.  We had a terrific cup of coffee, and John had a cup of authentic organic tomato soup that was incredible.  Amazing how they cultivated the tomato plants.

We even met a couple and their daughter from Chicago.  I guess "rivals" can come together in the most unheard of places.

Our next stop on the tour was to see hot springs and the Syrokkar geyser, which shoots 90 ft up every 4 to 5 minutes.

Our next stop was the Gullfoss waterfall located on the Hvita river, which is fed by the second largest glacier in Iceland, the Langjokull.

The tour ended with a visit to the Thingvellir National Park to see something I never thought I would see in my lifetime.  Tectonic plates - Eurasian and North American.  The plates separate up to 3 cm a year.  We were dropped off on the Eurasian plate and were picked up in "America."  :)   The walking path to the top was what separated the plates in the picture below.  Eurasian is on the left and North American is on the right. Our guide advised us Iceland has earthquakes every day; mainly so minor that you cannot feel them.

The formation was breathtaking and part of the way was another waterfall (name unknown to us) but with the most purest water (FREEZING).  This was definitely worth the hike up through the rain and cold.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

We ended this fantastic day with a wonderful meal at Jomfruin, a Scandinavian kitchen.  We had the sweetest waitress and it was a true experience to enjoy a meal with terrific food, fabulous classic jazz music and my husband next to me.  ❤❤
