DOVER CASTLE
The castle was pretty spectacular - I've actually never been in one before Dover Castle. Lots of rooms - 116 steps up to the tower (huffing and puffing our way up - we are SO out of shape). Many rooms to explore, audio to listen to and shows to watch.
Dover Castle has been part of British military defense for centuries and was also used during WWII as a defensive point and was a key location during the Battle of Dunkirk. This spot was a regional command post for the British before the American Allies joined the war.
Just a few random shots of the many we took while here.
I really don't know anything about this remarkable place. I heard of this location over the years, but only sporadically. It's truly a natural wonder, I think. I would have loved to have been on one of the boats out in the Channel looking back towards shore and seeing this. Pictures truly do not do these cliffs justice. It was so peaceful - not many people visiting when we were there. There was no way we could find to go down to the water and it truly didn't look like there was ever any access to the beach at all. The drive to get to the cliffs was one truly off the beaten path....in fact, the path looked like it had been beaten up over many years. Lots of potholes, definitely not kept up, and it would have been better taking an ATV than a VW Sean. :)
On to the next day. :)
