We first visited the Viking Ship Museum where restoration is continuing on 5 ships discovered and excavated in 1962 in the Roskilde Fjord. The ships date back 1000 years. I've included a link which describes the findings.

The museum has restored the original ships as much as they can with the pieces of the five ships which survived. They are housed directly in the museum. Craftsman are building true-to-size replicas of each ship using the same type of tools and the same carving techniques the builders of the original ships would have used 1,000 years ago. The craftsman are also using the same type of trees that the original 5 are made out of. The outdoor pictures below depict the making of the replicas. We've also captured a few tourists taking cruises.
The Original Five
Our next stop - the Cathedral
The Roskilde Cathedral was initially built as a church in 960. The cathedral has been the main burial site for Danish monarchs since the 15th century.
Relics discovered
The burials underground:
Initially the monarchs and bishops were laid to rest underground. About 80% of the floor in the main chapel were underground burials.
Seating arranged along one of the walls - they appear to be original.
The pulpit and pews facing each other
Friezes depicting Christ and the 12 apostles.
A view of the other end of the main chapel
John really wants to know what is on the other side of this door. LOL!
After we finished at the cathedral we decided to grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant. We don't normally take pictures of our food, but couldn't resist doing so this time.
Mine was a goat cheese salad - VERY DELICIOUS!
And this monstrosity was John's lunch --- a "club sandwich" - Also very delicious!
Yes, it is that time again -- to hit the road - on to the next destination!
Okay --- where could this be going to??? :)
HHMMMMMM - it appears to be a tunnel
Yep - that is exactly what it is.....
Our GPS knows exactly where we are ----- we are under the Oresund Strait!!
Coming out the other side
More wind turbines in the Strait
At the time the below picture was taken, we had just come out from the underwater tunnel and onto the "fake" island that was built to begin the highway again, taking it across the Oresund Bridge.
Goodbye Denmark - Hello Sweden!!
Finally - after a 3.5 hour drive from Roskilde, Denmark, we made our way to the next hotel - on a boat in Goteborg, Sweden. Time to call it a day and rest up for tomorrow's adventure.
